Wheelchair Ramps: Amramp Provides Access in any Situation

Amramp Wheelchair Ramp Saves Family from Fire

Posted on Wed, Sep 27, 2017

“The quality of the ramp you installed saved me and my husband’s life. We were thinking about an aluminum wheelchair ramp. Thank God, we did not. My neighbors modular home exploded and my trailer home blew up and your ramp was not damaged and safe to use. I highly recommend this ramp and will in the future to others.”                                                             Sincerely, a Clinton, CT Family

Just over a week ago, Bob Danek, owner of the Amramp Connecticut & Eastern New York franchise, and the Amramp Connecticut Team installed a wheelchair ramp for a Clinton, CT family to access their new mobile home. This past Friday, less than a week after the ramp was installed, the family was awoken in the middle of the night by a large explosion. Their whole home was rocked by a blast from their neighbors’ mobile home exploding due to being filled with propane. The family quickly tried to exit their home only to find a large debris field and fire all around them. One family member uses a power chair could safely navigate down our steel modular ramp where they safely exited away from their home - which was on fire at the time. There was debris and fire all around them from the neighbors’ unit, which used to be about 100' away.

Many homes in the park were damaged from the blast that flew debris up to 100 yards, but our Amramp Modular Ramp survived!

Bob Danek remarked, “Upon inspection of our ramp we found no noticeable damage nor shifting of any part of the ramp. The solid structure of our ramp withstood the force of the blast that knocked out both sliding doors and all the windows in their unit. Our ramp allowed them to safely exit their home during this emergency.”

The Amramp steel ramp system is made in South Boston, Massachusetts from recycled steel and is cost effective, energy efficient, attractive…and fireproof!

Per design standards, wheelchair ramps are an emergency means of egress in a fire and should be fireproof. Amramp meets and exceeds those criteria and is made from the same steel as fire escapes. Wood and aluminum are not fireproof. Aluminum melts in the heat of a fire. Amramp is your trusted source for safe and affordable wheelchair ramps.

Amramp installs wheelchair ramps and other accessibility products throughout the US and parts of Canada at residential homes, businesses, schools and institutions.

Amramp is the leading company in the United States specializing in modular steel wheelchair ramps, offering sturdy, customizable ramps for disability access that enable the aging and disabled population to remain in their homes safely with independence and mobility.

Ramps can be installed temporarily for short or long-term needs – for purchase or rental. They are not a permanent modification and do not require footings so they can be installed in almost any type of weather.

Amramp products comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and are available for sale or rental with no minimum time frame and no ramp size restrictions – even for just one day!

Amramp also installs stair lifts, vertical platform lifts, overhead patient lifts and other accessibility products – all intended to keep the people safe at home, among loved ones. Visit www.amramp.com to find out more about Amramp.

Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation

SHORT HILLS, N.J., Aug. 15, 2017 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation, a national nonprofit dedicated to improving quality of life for individuals living with paralysis, announced it has awarded over $800,000 in Quality of Life grants this year. Quality of Life grants support fellow nonprofits that mirror the Reeve Foundation's mission and commitment to foster community engagement, enhance independence and promote healthy self-esteem. The program has awarded over $22 million in grants to over 2,900 programs since its inception in 1999. In the first grant cycle of 2017, $809,291 in Quality of Life grants were awarded to 90 nonprofits nationwide. Funding for the grants is made available through the Paralysis Resource Center (PRC) operated by the Reeve Foundation under a cooperative agreement with the Administration for Community Living in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

"We are continually looking for new ways for individuals living with paralysis to reintegrate themselves into the community through our grant programs," said Maggie Goldberg, VP of Policy and Programs. "Whether it is a small grant for a ramp to access a public building, or a larger award to support an accessible community playground or transportation service, each project brings us closer to our ultimate goal of full inclusion and independence."

The grants given out for this specific cycle covered a variety of projects including:

Ramp Access Made Possible by Students (RAMPS), Richmond, VA— $10,000
This Quality of Life grant will support a nonprofit community service organization based in Richmond in which high school student volunteers build modular wheelchair ramps for individuals living with mobility impairments and elderly people in the community who cannot afford a ramp to get them in and out of their homes safely. RAMPS is the "go-to" organization for the Virginia Commonwealth University Health System's Spinal Cord Injury and Neuroscience units. Grant funds will support AMRAMP Material (hardened modular steel pieces).

Bill Grove and the Amramp Richmond team have been working with the RAMPS program for many years to install wheelchair ramps. Together, they have provided more than 200 wheelchair ramps for area residents in Richmond, VA.

6 Affordable Changes to Make Your Home More "Senior Friendly"

Posted on Wed, Aug 02, 2017

victorian-exterior-1.jpg

You were supposed to grow old together, but now you are starting to feel betrayed… Not from your spouse – but from your house!

Your “safe place” is now turning into a scary place. With all the love and attention you gave your house over the years, it seems your house hasn’t kept up its end of the bargain.

A report by the National Conference of State Legislatures and the AARP Public Policy Institute revealed that nearly 90 percent of surveyed seniors over age 65 want to stay in their current residence for as long as possible, and 80 percent believe that their current residence is where they will always live. However less than half of surveyed seniors indicate their homes are currently equipped to allow them to “age in place”.

The idea of staying at home is appealing because it does not involve any major life changes. You can keep your circle of friends and community, shop at the same familiar stores, visit your favorite restaurants, keep your daily routine. But, as situations change, there comes a time when staying at home can become a source of stress rather than a comfort.

The key is to evaluate your home and determine what needs to be changed before there are any major health issues. You don’t want to be making remodeling decisions when you are in the middle of dealing with a health crisis – or have someone else making those decisions for you. You also don’t have to do everything at once. If you start planning now before any issues arise, you can space out the work and expense over a period of time.

Let’s look at some easy, affordable ways to bring your house back to your safe place again.

  1. Increased lighting, especially at the front and back entrances, maybe with motion sensors so the lights come on as you approach the entrance. Increasing the wattage of the bulbs in interior hallways and stairways. Adding larger windows, skylights or task lighting to the kitchen.
  2. Making a safer entrance with a ramp and railings and smooth threshold transitions between rooms and outdoor decks or patios.
  3. Add safety rails and grab bars in the bathroom
  4. Add a stair lift or platform lift for safe access to the upper and/or lower level
  5. Widen the doorways and hallways to accommodate walkers, scooters or wheelchairs
  6. Add lever handles to doors, cabinets and faucets for easier opening

When you are ready to start your project, look for a company with accessibilities experience who is familiar with the Americans with Disabilities Act guidelines, local zoning laws, and which employs Certified Aging in Place Specialists (CAPS) that have been trained by the National Association of Home Builders on remodeling existing homes to age-in-place.

Amramp can evaluate any home to determine what changes are needed to make the living space as accommodating as possible in the years ahead. Check out Amramp’s accessibility solutions online at www.amramp.com. Take advantage of Amramp’s FREE evaluation to review your needs and lay out a remodeling plan by calling 888-715-7598 or emailing to info@amramp.com.

Starting to add some or all of these changes now will help you to fall in love with your home all over again!

But what if you can’t get up and down your stairs freely? You may be able to walk, but you find stairs challenging.

Be stroke-smart: prevention, symptoms, support

Posted on Mon, May 01, 2017

May is National Stroke Awareness Month — the perfect time for brushing up on your knowledge about stroke symptoms, how to respond if you’re witnessing a stroke, and how to support a loved one who is returning home after a stroke.

Stroke Symptoms

Familiarizing yourself with stroke symptoms is key to recognizing them and acting quickly if you happen to witness them. Stroke symptoms come on very suddenly, without warning. What to look for: Some of the most common stroke symptoms, according to the CDC:

  • Weakness or numbness on one side of the body, including the face, arm, or leg
  • Difficulty speaking or slurred speech
  • Confusion
  • Vision problems
  • Dizziness
  • Loss of balance
  • Coordination trouble
  • Severe headache

Stroke Response

Time is of the essence when it comes to stroke response. The faster you can intervene when someone is experiencing stroke symptoms, the better. If time is on your side, the outcome for the stroke victim improves dramatically. Remember the acronym “FAST” when deciding how to act in the face of common stroke symptoms.

FAST stands for:

  • FACE: Look for drooping one on side of the face
  • ARM: Does one drift downward?
  • SPEECH: Is speech slurred or distorted?
  • TIME: Call 911 right away if you notice these symptoms

Stroke Recovery

As difficult as a stroke is on the stroke victim, it also takes a toll on their loved ones and caretakers, and can change life significantly. Depending on the severity of the stroke, the victim’s quality of life can be impacted —either temporarily or permanently. They may need to have their living space modified to better meet their needs, and make it easier to safely navigate around their home. To get started, visit Amramp’s helpful guide for preparing the home for a stroke survivor here.

Other helpful online resources include the Careliving Guide from the experts at stroke.org.

Don’t let a stroke keep your loved ones from feeling safe and comfortable in their own home. Let Amramp’s total mobility solutions offer the freedom and peace of mind they deserve.

Amramp recognizes ALS Awareness Month

Posted on Mon, May 01, 2017

May is ALS awareness month, and since Amramp works with so many individuals and families who have been affected by this disease, we want to recognize all the work that advocates are doing to find a cure.

ALS, short for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, is a neurological disease that causes muscle weakness and impacts the way our bodies physically function. Only 5% of ALS cases are familial, meaning that the disease was inherited genetically. This means that 95% of ALS cases are sporadic. It can affect anyone, anywhere.

Since ALS often affects a person's body so rapidly, families look to make urgent changes to create accessible environments for their loved ones. Amramp promises to quickly install the correct ramps and lifts to ensure mobility.
