Just over a week ago, Bob Danek, owner of the Amramp Connecticut & Eastern New York franchise, and the Amramp Connecticut Team installed a wheelchair ramp for a Clinton, CT family to access their new mobile home. This past Friday, less than a week after the ramp was installed, the family was awoken in the middle of the night by a large explosion. Their whole home was rocked by a blast from their neighbors’ mobile home exploding due to being filled with propane. The family quickly tried to exit their home only to find a large debris field and fire all around them. One family member uses a power chair could safely navigate down our steel modular ramp where they safely exited away from their home - which was on fire at the time. There was debris and fire all around them from the neighbors’ unit, which used to be about 100' away.

Many homes in the park were damaged from the blast that flew debris up to 100 yards, but our Amramp Modular Ramp survived!

Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation Awards over $800,000 in Quality of Life Grants

More than $22 million awarded since the program's inception

SHORT HILLS, N.J., Aug. 15, 2017 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation, a national nonprofit dedicated to improving quality of life for individuals living with paralysis, announced it has awarded over $800,000 in Quality of Life grants this year. Quality of Life grants support fellow nonprofits that mirror the Reeve Foundation's mission and commitment to foster community engagement, enhance independence and promote healthy self-esteem. The program has awarded over $22 million in grants to over 2,900 programs since its inception in 1999. In the first grant cycle of 2017, $809,291 in Quality of Life grants were awarded to 90 nonprofits nationwide. Funding for the grants is made available through the Paralysis Resource Center (PRC) operated by the Reeve Foundation under a cooperative agreement with the Administration for Community Living in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

"We are continually looking for new ways for individuals living with paralysis to reintegrate themselves into the community through our grant programs," said Maggie Goldberg, VP of Policy and Programs. "Whether it is a small grant for a ramp to access a public building, or a larger award to support an accessible community playground or transportation service, each project brings us closer to our ultimate goal of full inclusion and independence."

The grants given out for this specific cycle covered a variety of projects including:

Ramp Access Made Possible by Students (RAMPS), Richmond, VA— $10,000
This Quality of Life grant will support a nonprofit community service organization based in Richmond in which high school student volunteers build modular wheelchair ramps for individuals living with mobility impairments and elderly people in the community who cannot afford a ramp to get them in and out of their homes safely. RAMPS is the "go-to" organization for the Virginia Commonwealth University Health System's Spinal Cord Injury and Neuroscience units. Grant funds will support AMRAMP Material (hardened modular steel pieces).

Bill Grove and the Amramp Richmond team have been working with the RAMPS program for many years to install wheelchair ramps. Together, they have provided more than 200 wheelchair ramps for area residents in Richmond, VA.

May is National Stroke Awareness Month — the perfect time for brushing up on your knowledge about stroke symptoms, how to respond if you’re witnessing a stroke, and how to support a loved one who is returning home after a stroke.

Stroke Symptoms

Familiarizing yourself with stroke symptoms is key to recognizing them – and acting quickly if you happen to witness them. Stroke symptoms come on very suddenly, without warning. What to look for: Some of the most common stroke symptoms, according to the CDC:

• Weakness or numbness on one side of the body, including the face, arm, or leg
• Difficulty speaking or slurred speech
• Confusion
• Vision problems
• Dizziness
• Loss of balance
• Coordination trouble
• Severe headache

Stroke Response

Time is of the essence when it comes to stroke response. The faster you can intervene when someone is experiencing stroke symptoms, the better. If time is on your side, the outcome for the stroke victim improves dramatically. Remember the acronym “FAST” when deciding how to act in the face of common stroke symptoms.

FAST stands for:

• FACE: Look for drooping one on side of the face
• ARM: Does one drift downward?
• SPEECH: Is speech slurred or distorted?
• TIME: Call 911 right away if you notice these symptoms

As difficult as a stroke is on the stroke victim, it also takes a toll on their loved ones and caretakers, and can change life significantly.
