Amramp recognizes ALS Awareness Month

Posted on Mon, May 01, 2017

May is ALS awareness month, and since Amramp works with so many individuals and families who have been affected by this disease, we want to recognize all the work that advocates are doing to find a cure.

ALS, short for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, is a neurological disease that causes muscle weakness and impacts the way our bodies physically function. Only 5% of ALS cases are familial, meaning that the disease was inherited genetically. This means that 95% of ALS cases are sporadic. It can affect anyone, anywhere.

Since ALS often affects a person's body so rapidly, families look to make urgent changes to create accessible environments for their loved ones. Amramp promises to quickly install the correct ramps and lifts to ensure mobility.

5 home-safety products for elders’ holiday wish lists

Posted on Wed, Dec 21, 2016

Your Loved Ones Can't Refuse a Present from Santa: Get Them On Board with Home Modifications

Of more than 46.2 million elderly people living in the United States, 90 percent wish to remain in their own homes. With this in mind, there is a growing need to address this population’s safety needs and concerns so they may safely do so.

One of the biggest challenges in meeting the needs of the elderly population is getting them to recognize those needs for themselves! From “I’m fine!” to “It was just a little slip,” the aging generation often downplays their need for help in safely navigating their own property. As loved ones and caretakers, it’s up to us to let them know what is available – and affordable – to keep them safely living at home.

5 holiday wish list home-safety products

Have your parents add these to their list “for Santa.” Need help convincing them? See the “why” behind them. They each have their own benefits, but together, they allow your loved ones to keep calling the place they love home!

Vertical platform lifts

An essential for accessing raised entries in and around the home. From the stairway that connects the garage to the home, or the front steps that lead to the mailbox, there are raised entries that your loved ones need to access every day.

Why: When loved ones’ grapple with compromised mobility, they still need the freedom to come and go as they please, and carry on with day-to-day living. A vertical platform lift offers independence.

Wheelchair ramps

Make daily navigation a breeze with a slip resistant surface.  Available to rent or own, wheelchair ramps can be easily installed and fitted to most any entryway.

Why: You don’t have to be wheelchair-bound to benefit from a ramp in the home. Stairs are tricky at any age, and become increasingly so as we age. This is a good safety move in general, especially if they are getting around on their own using a walker or wheelchair. Consider if they fell, whether anyone would know. We all know how popular the “I’ve fallen and can’t get up” systems are.

Grab bars

They prevent slips and falls that can be detrimental to the health of our loved ones, young and old. Safety grab bars can be quickly installed by experts into showers and tubs.

Why: They may be feeling well now, and thank goodness! But a quick slip and broken hip or knee can change everything, and these accidents become more dangerous with age.

Stair lifts – easily installed and designed for safe, comfortable, and independent use rather than hazardous staircases.

They provide the convenience and comfort of independent use rather than hazardous staircases. They can be fit to all types of staircases, indoor and out.

Why: If your loved ones want to age at home, he or she should be free to access the entire home, and not just parts of it. What good is an upstairs bedroom when it’s not accessible? Stair lifts offer unparalleled freedom to make use of the entire space.

Automatic door openers

Without the need for tricky wiring, an automatic door opener can be affixed to any indoor or outdoor door, based on individual needs.

Why: Finagling doors can be tricky, especially when your hands are full. How convenient is it to walk into a store when you’re pushing a grocery cart, and have the doors just open for you? This solution is all about convenience and ease. This is especially key for loved ones who use walkers and other aids, or perhaps have trouble reaching for doorknobs or locks from a wheelchair. This is also crucial for arthritis and MS sufferers whose hands simply don’t work as they should.

With the help of home modifications and safety solutions, our elderly loved ones can be where they want to be, and you can be sure they’re safe. Remind them of this, and they’re sure to get on board. If not, Santa will take the heat!

Amramp Provides Access for Keystone Military Families Food Bank in Shoemakersville, PA

Keystone Amramp Provides Access for Keystone Military Families Food Bank in Shoemakersville PA.jpg

Keystone Military Families Food Bank is an organization based in Shoemakersville, Pennsylvania that has been assisting deployed troops, veterans and military families since 2002. Their goal is to provide support to the military community while preserving their dignity. They are currently operating a food bank at their Shoemakersville center, serving from 40 to 60 families weekly. They found that some of their families had difficulty accessing the center because it was not wheelchair accessible. They turned to Nick Marcellino to install a wheelchair ramp. Nick and Amramp Philadelphia team were honored to be able to be able to help and provide the ramp.

It was a very moving moment when the ramp was completed. It brought tears to the eyes of the staff members. They were all so thankful that the food pantry was now wheelchair accessible for everyone to be able to access safely and easily.

Keystone Military Families functions as a resource center and assists Veteran families in finding whatever type of help is needed, from rent assistance to job searches and counseling services. There is an in-house counselor provided by the Lancaster Veterans Center to assist individuals or families with mental health and reintegration issues. KMF works closely with the VA Hospitals, Veterans centers in 5 counties and other organizations that provide assistance. They are a close knit community that is proud to serve our military members, our veterans and their families.

Our military and veterans have given up many things in their service to our country. Those who are deployed should not have to worry if their kids have enough breakfast before school or if the baby will have diapers and food. Many spouses lose jobs when they transfer to a new area with their military member. There are several hundred thousand combat injured vets who are waiting for a medical determination and have no income during the up-to 18 months that determination can take. There are a host of other reasons they end up in a tight money squeeze and the bottom line is they just need some help to get through this crisis and back on their feet.

An added benefit to the pantry is that we work very closely with the Family Action Center Specialists, the VA Hospital, SSVF, Salvation Army, Veterans Centers in 5 counties and many military support organizations and groups. When someone comes to the pantry we can also assess their current needs and direct them to the other sources of help they may qualify for. We do not cover electric or heating bills but we know of 3 other organizations that do so we can get them set up with an appointment. We do not handle any medical issues but if they appear to need some sort of medical evaluation we can get an appointment set up with the FACS to get things rolling.

If you are interested in volunteering or providing assistance in some way, please call Keystone Military Families at 610-698-2122 and they will get you set up with something that fits your abilities.

4 easy ways to make your home safer for holiday guests

Posted on Tue, Nov 15, 2016

There’s no place like home for the holidays, as the saying goes — but is your home safe and welcoming for every guest on your list this year?

Consider special mobility issues that may be new this year, or have changed since your last gathering. Maybe you’re hosting your aunt who had her hip replaced last month, or your father-in-law, who just doesn’t get around as easily as he used to. A wheelchair ramp rental or other short-term accessibility solutions from Amramp can help make your festivities a success for everyone on your guest list.

Whatever the case, Amramp can offer the proper mobility solution to ensure that the holidays remain a time of relaxation and togetherness, rather than undue stress of accessibility issues or possible slips and falls.

Here are our four tips to help make your home safer and more accessible for all of your holiday guests:

Amramp_ThanksgivingHolidayRental.jpg

Wheelchair ramp rentals, even for a day

Avoid last minute panic with one of Amramp’s durable, ADA-compliant ramps that are 100% customized to accommodate 99% of properties. Made of steel, the wheelchair ramps have a gripping texture to prevent skidding or icing. You work hard on maintaining your home, and the steel wheelchair ramps create an aesthetic that’s suitable for residential use and leave no permanent damage.

There is no minimal or maximum rental period, so you can be accommodated no matter how long your guests will be staying. Amramp also provides free on-site estimates on your schedule, and ramps can be installed and removed quickly — even in harsh winter weather.

De-clutter your home

Consider that loved one who use wheelchairs and walkers and other assistive mobility devices will need additional room to maneuver. Kids’ toys, hall tables, baskets for mittens all should be removed for this short time. Consider that your guests, even the ones who have no mobility concerns, may be hard of sight and could trip.

Don’t forget to ditch the area rugs

Area rugs – in the kitchen, the bathroom, bath mats, they’re everywhere. But for the holidays, ditch them if you have older guests, or very young guests who are just mastering walking. They can easily trip, too, area rug or not! Luckily, babies and toddlers don’t land in the hospital though.

Light-up at night

Loved ones – young and old – in unfamiliar places are easily disoriented, especially at night. Don’t spare the nightlights. Battery-operated LEDs that only light up when they detect motion are cheap and efficient, and most importantly effective.

Wondering when to check off a wheelchair rental of your to-do list?

Contact Amramp as soon as possible, so we can ensure that your local expert mobility solution installers – all across the U.S and now in Canada – will be able to meet your needs. Installation can happen as quickly as 24-48 hours after you approve your quote, but being a busy time of year, we encourage you to book ahead.

The holidays are a time to gather close to your loved ones, so welcome them into your home with a safe, affordable short-term accessibility solution from Amramp. Happy holidays to you and yours!

Wheelchair manufacturer and installer Amramp offers innovative accessibility products, including the ADA–compliant, patented modular ramp system. On-site estimates are free and installation is generally within days, often within 24 hours. Fort McMurray Ready for Returning Residents

Posted on Wed, Jun 01, 2016

Waiting_Room_1.jpg

After the wild fire devastation and complete evacuation of the City of Fort McMurray, AB, the government is in high gear to keep the promise of a June 1 phased-in return date of 90,000 evacuees. Officials estimate up to 15,000 people to be headed back home on June 1. The fire began on May 3 and destroyed more than 2,400 homes and buildings.

To complicate matters, the hospital sustained smoke and water damage and must be decontaminated. This means a full service temporary field hospital needed to be built on site by Alberta Health Services (AHS).

On Friday May 27, Lorne Wensel of Amramp Alberta was contacted by Alcor Construction to supply wheelchair ramps for the AHS temporary field hospital in Fort McMurray for the June 1 return date. At the time the Amramp Alberta truck was loaded and ready for the trip to Grande Prairie, AB – about 5 hours NW of Edmonton with a large job that could not be delayed. Using mobile technology and the support of the Amramp home office in Boston, MA, plans, designs and inventory checks were done over the weekend for delivery on Monday, May 30, to Fort McMurray, about  5 hours NE of Edmonton.

The first 60-foot ramp went in for the Home Care AHS division trailer by 9 pm Monday night and the second 60-foot ramp, for the AHS patient waiting room - triage trailer, was installed by noon on Tuesday, May 31.

Amramp Mission Accomplished, in time for the return date deadline. Amramp proves once again that their inventoried centers, across the USA and now in Canada, offer accessibility solutions during times of crisis. From hurricanes, floods or fires Amramp is deployed locally, professionally and on time. Amramp Alberta is proud to be part of the YMM return. Fort McMurray Strong – you will rebuild!

Amramp Salutes Veterans - Veterans' Day 2015

When President Wilson first proclaimed November 11 as the first commemoration of Armistice Day he said, "To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations…"

Here at Amramp, we also wanted to express our gratitude to those who serve and have served our country and recognize their sacrifice with these images we have collected of each of the five branches of the military. All of us send our gratitude to those currently fighting overseas and to their families. Thank you for your service.
