The PACE – Programs of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly – Model of Care has its roots in San Francisco’s Chinatown-North Beach community, which realized a pressing need for long-term care services for its immigrant elders in the early 1970s. A committee led by William Gee, DDS, a public health dentist, hired Marie-Louise Ansak to investigate solutions. Working with other community leaders, they formed a nonprofit corporation called On Lok Senior Health Services to create a community-based system of care.

The National PACE Association aims to provide leadership and support for growth, innovation, quality, and success of the PACE Model of Care, which is recognized among consumers, health care providers, and government leaders as the most innovative, accessible, valuable, and effective model of care promoting the highest level of independence for individuals with significant health care needs.

PACE has grown considerably and currently has 107 programs operating in 32 states, where it offers services such as:

  • adult day care
  • physical, occupational, and recreational therapies
  • meal delivery
  • nutritional counseling
  • home health care and personal care
  • prescription drugs
  • social services
  • medical specialties, such as audiology, dentistry, optometry, podiatry, and speech therapy

The keynote speaker for the National PACE Association’s 2016 Annual Conference is Allison Massari, a masterful storyteller with a soul-stirring message that is content-rich with actionable takeways. Burn survivor, renowned artist, and champion of compassion and courage, Allison Massari teaches how to overcome adversity, triumph through change, and thrive with grace.

Amramp joins 25 exhibitors at the annual PACE conference to present and discuss how to continue providing innovative solutions for non-institutionalized, independent elder care.

Keeping our Senior Population Safe

Posted on Mon, Jul 20, 2015

Thompsons Sta TN Veteran 2

Each year, millions of adults aged 65 and older fall. Falls can cause moderate to severe injuries, such as hip fractures and head traumas, and can increase the risk of early death. Fortunately, falls are a public health problem that is largely preventable.

One of the key ways to help older adults prevent falls is reduce tripping hazards throughout the house.

Dave Taylor, Amramp Eastern Tennessee, identified 4 trip points at a veteran’s home in Thompsons Station, Tennessee. Dave was able to install some threshold ramps inside and outside the home to allow the veteran to more easily and safely go from room to room and out onto their patio.

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommends these tips on how to prevent falls among older adults:

  • Exercise regularly. It is important that the exercises focus on increasing leg strength and improving balance, and that they get more challenging over time. Tai Chi programs are especially good.
  • Ask their doctor or pharmacist to review their medicines—both prescription and over-the counter—to identify medicines that may cause side effects or interactions such as dizziness or drowsiness.
  • Have their eyes checked by an eye doctor at least once a year and update their eyeglasses to maximize their vision. Consider getting a pair with single vision distance lenses for some activities such as walking outside.
  • Make their homes safer by reducing tripping hazards, adding grab bars inside and outside the tub or shower and next to the toilet, adding railings on both sides of stairways, and improving the lighting in their homes.
