Amramp Salutes Veterans - Veterans' Day 2015

Amramp Salutes Veterans - Veterans' Day 2015

When President Wilson first proclaimed November 11 as the first commemoration of Armistice Day he said, "To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations…"

Here at Amramp, we also wanted to express our gratitude to those who serve and have served our country and recognize their sacrifice with these images we have collected of each of the five branches of the military. All of us send our gratitude to those currently fighting overseas and to their families. Thank you for your service.

Amramp exhibits at PACE 2015 elder inclusive-care conference

Amramp Selected to Exhibit at the 2015 NPA Annual Conference in Philadelphia

Amramp is honored to be selected to showcase its installed accessibility products and solutions at the 2015 National PACE Association (NPA) Annual Conference, Oct. 18-21, in Philadelphia.

PACE, aka Programs of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly, develops sustainable programs to deliver medical and supportive services to elders 55 and older whom the state certifies needing nursing home-level care.

Strikingly, only about 7% of PACE participants actually reside in a nursing home. Instead, PACE provides services and preserves independence in their own homes, with community support. This event, which is held exclusively for NPA members, exists to advance Programs of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly programs and provide networking and learning opportunities to the executive and clinical staff work tirelessly to support and promote comprehensive, quality, and cost-effective health care services for seniors.

The PACE model of care first began in the early 1970s when William Gee, a public health dentist who headed the nonprofit Chinatown-North Beach Health Care Planning and Development Corporation, hired social worker Marie-Louise Ansak to study the feasibility of building a nursing home in the community. When she found that building a nursing home would be financially impossible, she developed a comprehensive system of care based on the geriatric day-hospital model developed in the UK during the late 1950s and 1960s. Ansak then worked to obtain funding to train health care workers in cooperation with the University of California San Francisco. Since then PACE has grown considerably and currently has 107 programs operating in 32 states, where they offer services such as:

  • adult day care

  • physical, occupational, and recreational therapies

  • meal delivery

  • nutritional counseling

  • home health care and personal care

  • prescription drugs

  • social services

  • medical specialties, such as audiology, dentistry, optometry, podiatry, and speech therapy

More than 600 individuals attended the 2014 NPA Annual Conference, this year is expected to be even bigger. With more than 60 education sessions and 20 poster presentations, attendees will have the opportunity to learn and, with over 25 companies exhibiting.

This year’s keynote speaker Dr. Leana Wen is an emergency-room physician, Rhodes Scholar, author, and TED speaker. Dr. Wen received her medical training at Washington University and Brigham & Women's Hospital/Massachusetts General Hospital, where she was a clinical fellow at Harvard Medical School. As a professor of emergency medicine and health policy, she co-led a national collaboration on health policy and social mission and was founder and director of Who’s My Doctor, a campaign calling for transparency in medicine. The focus of Dr. Wen’s TED talks surround patient advocacy and health care reform. She recently released a book entitled When Doctors Don't Listen: How to Avoid Misdiagnoses and Unnecessary Tests. Her speaking fee will be donated to Baltimore-area and other charities.

Amramp is looking forward to being a part of this conference that shares our passion for helping seniors maintain their independence. We will be demonstrating Amramp’s latest accessibility products, including our patent-pending modular ramp system, vertical lifts, and portable showers. Looking forward to seeing all PACE members in Philadelphia!

Amramp Helps US Olympic and Paralympic Athletes Celebrate in Washington, DC

Posted on Thu, Apr 17, 2014

describe the image

More than 200 Team USA athletes, including 78 medalists from the 2014 Sochi Games, were celebrated at a red-carpet event at the historic Warner Theatre in Washington, D.C., on April 2 for the US Olympic Committee’s inaugural Best of US awards program.

Greg Lazzaroni of Amramp DC is proud to have installed two wheelchair ramps at the reception so all the athletes would be able to meet and mingle during the event. The event organizer said, “The ramps were great, they were using them like crazy. Thanks for a great job!”

U.S. Olympic Committee’s inaugural Best of U.S. awards program drew more than 200 Team USA athletes who competed in the Olympic and Paralympic Games, 78 wearing their 2014 medals.

Wearing her two bronze medals for alpine skiing, Best Female Paralympian and Moment of the Games awards-winner Stephanie Jallen noted the magnitude of the games: "The Paralympics meant everything to me," Jallen told USA Today. Jallen was born with one leg and one fully developed arm. "I trained for it for nine years. The opportunity alone to race and represent the USA was … I can't even describe it. And then to be able to medal."

Paralympic alpine skier Mark Bathum was tapped Best Male Paralympian. The men’s sled hockey team was designated Team of the Games. Skater Jason Brown’s coach and guide Kori Ade was honored with the USG Building Dreams award, according to TeamUSA.org.

Other notable Paralympians

After a motorcycle collision with a drunk driver, then aspiring professional skateboarder Evan Strong lost a leg. A decade later, the Paralympic snowboarding gold medalist said, “I never dreamed about being a Paralympian or winning a Paralympic gold medal. After the accident I wanted to get back to life and to sports again. I love it. I couldn’t live without it.”

Two-time sled hockey Paralympian Greg Shaw commented on NBC broadcasting the gold-medal sled hockey game live: “It’s awesome getting so much coverage for our sport. People recognize me because they saw me on TV.” Joining his teammates to accept their award for Team of the Games, Shaw told TeamUSA.org: “It’s really like a brotherhood.”

Best of U.S. Paralympic Award-Winners

The first-ever awards were selected by fans after the US Olympic Committee nominated Olympians and Paralympians.

Best Female Paralympian: Stephanie Jallen, two bronze medals, alpine skiing

Best Male Paralympian: Mark Bathum, two silver medals, alpine skiing

Best Team/Paralympics: men's sled hockey, gold medalists

Best Moment/Paralympics: another award for Stephanie Jallen, two bronze medals in alpine skiing

The Paralympic Games bring together athletes with a range of physical and intellectual challenges, including mobility limitations but also blindness, cerebral palsy, and amputations. The Paralympics started as a small gathering of British World War II veterans in 1948 and grew from there; in 2014, 47 nations/committees sent representative athletes to Sochi. “Para” in Greek means “beside” or “alongside,” and the Paralympic Games are held “in parallel” with the Olympic Games. 1988 marked the first year that the Paralympics were automatically held in the same location directly following the Olympic Games, and this agreement has continued through 2014.

MDA Muscle Walk: Get moving for a great cause. Join Amramp March 29

Posted on Fri, Mar 28, 2014

Muscular Dystrophy is a genetic disorder that causes muscles to weaken over time, and thousands of Americans are affected by it. The Muscular Dystrophy Association started the MDA Muscle Walk, a non-competitive “get moving” event held in cities across the country to honor and raise money for adults and children who have one of the different types of muscle diseases that fall under the Muscular Dystrophy classification, such as Duchenne (DMD), Becker, and Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). Amramp is proud to be a sponsor this year of the MDA Muscle Walk – our corporate team is excited to get out there and show some spirit at the Massachusetts & Rhode Island walk on March 29th at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, and we hope local readers will join us!

The MDA Muscle Walk is the largest event of its kind in the U.S, bringing together friends and family members of all generations to participate in some fun, light exercise (most walks are no more than a mile). Money raised by the event will go toward medical research as well as services for families affected by neuromuscular disease.

According to the National Institute of Health, MD consists of "more than 30 genetic diseases characterized by progressive weakness and degeneration of the skeletal muscles that control movement. Some forms of MD are seen in infancy or childhood, while others may not appear until middle age or later." Each case is different, and the effects and severity can vary from one individual to another. Treatment may include "physical therapy, respiratory therapy, speech therapy, orthopedic appliances used for support, and corrective orthopedic surgery," as well as pharmaceutical medications. In many cases, people with MD are also wheelchair users.

MDA is the world’s largest voluntary health agency to support and fund research and provide healthcare services to families, as well as raising awareness about MD. Amramp's mission as a company is to help those with mobility challenges – including neuromuscular diseases – by creating products to make their environments safer, more accessible, and easier to navigate. Amramp supports the MDA Muscle Walk because we see nearly every day the effects of the disease and are doing our part to find better therapies through research.

We hope you’ll join us in raising money for Muscular Dystrophy by participating in a walk held in your area, and for our New England readers, we’d love to see you in Foxboro on March 29th!
