Amramp Salutes U.S. Armed Forces Veterans Day 2018

Posted on Wed, Oct 17, 2018

Amramp pays respect to men and women serving in the U.S. armed forces

We have shared veterans statistics and simple ways to help veterans, but this year we want to highlight veterans with disabilities.

According to the Department of Veterans Affairs, nearly 4.7 million veterans are receiving VA disability compensation. Disability compensation is defined as:

a tax free monetary benefit paid to Veterans with disabilities that are the result of a disease or injury incurred or aggravated during active military service. Compensation may also be paid for post-service disabilities that are considered related or secondary to disabilities occurring in service and for disabilities presumed to be related to circumstances of military service, even though they may arise after service. Generally, the degrees of disability specified are also designed to compensate for considerable loss of working time from exacerbations or illnesses.

Why is it relevant to discuss disability compensation for veterans? Because this statistic reflects the importance of finding the right healthcare solutions to better serve veterans in the United States.

Creative Wheelchair Halloween Costume Ideas

Posted on Wed, Oct 03, 2018

Amramp salutes families and kids who celebrate Halloween with their awesome costumes

It can be challenging to find the right costume for children who require special mobility solutions, but it doesn't mean that it's impossible!

Now, with so many online resources available on blogs and social media, it's easier for parents to get Halloween costume ideas for their children to make their own costumes. ABC News shared the Carrie McLelland, a Texas mother who builds Halloween costumes for children with spina bifida. She started by creating wheelchair-friendly costumes for her son, Caleb, who has dressed as Mario Kart, Bob the Builder, and Batman in the Batmobile.

There are also companies and creatives like McLelland who can create a custom wheelchair costume. This approach does require more advanced planning, but it's worth keeping in mind for next year!

Want to get started thinking of your child's Halloween costume? Pinterest and Etsy are great places to find inspiration for children's Halloween costumes, as well as family costume ideas—we found several wheelchair costume ideas that we featured in last year's Halloween blog post.

Here are some of our favorite inspiration for children's wheelchair costumes this Halloween:

Use Technology to Take Control of Your Health Without Leaving Your Home

Posted on Tue, Jul 10, 2018

Technology is giving patients the ability to gain the insight into their health without having to leave their homes. This is great news for those with mobility concerns, avoiding risk of injury such as falls due to weather conditions and terrain.

Each year, 3 million older people are treated in emergency departments for fall injuries. Being able to stay home for routine check-ups could help reduce the staggering amount of injuries.

Technology & Healthcare

Technology is creating roots in our healthcare system, integrating itself into every aspect of the process you’d expect to go through when you see your doctor. In today’s world, you can visit your doctor virtually for a check-up or to seek advice. Healthcare workers are using data from patient phone apps to track blood sugar levels, weight, and many other commonly monitored vitals to gain needed insights to properly assess and diagnose.

The possibilities with technology are endless, and the results have been positive. 80% of physicians are using smartphones and medical apps, and more than 25% of physicians are using mobile technology to provide patient care. Along with the ability to be in communication with patients, technology enables professionals to collaborate. This could be for advanced cases, to gain a second opinion, or just to have everything needed in one place when patients go from one specialty doctor to another. This is the new normal in healthcare.

Your health, healthcare’s future

The American Case Management Association’s (ACMA) 25th Annual Case Management and Transitions of Care Conference’s keynote speaker Dr. Daniel Kraft spoke on “The Future of Health and Medicine: Where Can Technology Take Us” and his clinical and biomedical perspective on technology and its future impact on health care.

Dr. Daniel Kraft Speaking at TedMed

Dr. Daniel Kraft is a Stanford and Harvard trained physician-scientist, inventor, entrepreneur, and innovator with more than 25 years’ experience. He is highly regarded for his insights into the impact and potential of technology in the health and medicine sector.

His talk at the ACMA conference gave an overview of how technology is integrating itself into the everyday lives in the healthcare industry and changing how the whole system works.

Be informed about how the changes could affect you

Watch Dr. Daniel Kraft’s Ted Talk “Medicine’s future? There’s an app for that” to inform yourself further on the ongoing changes in healthcare.

For Amramp customers and the general population, having insight into their health can save them multiple trips to their doctor that can hold up their lives. Technology can help to empower those who often need general check-ups to take their lives back. While consultations would still be required, patients can gain back the time it takes to get to and wait at the doctor’s office.

Amramp has the same spirit of empowerment by offering accessibility solutions like wheelchair lifts, modular wheelchair ramps, portable, lightweight wheelchair ramps, vertical lifts, and threshold ramps enabling them to be as independent as they would like to be.

June is National Safety Month - Staying Safe at Home

Posted on Mon, Jun 18, 2018

June is National Safety Month

Home safety is an important topic all year round, but National Safety Month gives us a reminder to stop and assess our surroundings and make adjustments to keep everyone safe at home, especially the elderly and people with disabilities.

The first step should be to make a home emergency plan. Develop a plan of action to make sure everyone can exit the home in case of fire or other emergency. Make sure everyone is aware of the exit plan and knows if they have to go help another person.

A ramp at one or more entrances to the home can help someone with limited mobility and their caregiver to get out quickly and safely.

Smart speakers, such as Amazon Echo or Google Assistant and wearable technology can be used to contact authorities verbally even if someone cannot reach the phone.

Next, look around the home – inside and outside – to identify things that may cause falls or injuries.

Falling is the third leading cause of unintentional-injury-related death over all age groups, but it’s the #1 cause of death for those 65 and older.

While falls can happen anywhere, they most often occur at home. What can you do to make your home or the home of someone you love safer?

  • Remove clutter, small furniture, pet gear, electrical cords, throw rugs and anything else that might cause someone to trip
  • Arrange or remove furniture so there is plenty of room for walking
  • Secure carpets to the floor
  • Wipe up spills immediately
  • Make sure outdoor areas are well lit and walkways are smooth and free from ice in winter
  • Use non-slip adhesive strips on stairs
  • Use non-skid mats or appliques in the bath and shower
  • Install grab bars in the tub, shower and near the toilet
  • Install railings on both sides of stairs
  • Ramps can help people with mobility issues get into and out of their homes safely and easily
  • Ramps also provide a safe emergency exit in the event of fire
  • Provide adequate lighting in every room and stairway
  • Place nightlights in the kitchen, bath and hallways
  • Make often-used items more accessible, like food, clothing, etc., so an older person won't be tempted to use a stool or ladder to get to them
  • If necessary, provide personal walking devices, such as a cane or walker, to aid in stability
  • Consider smart speakers or smart home technology for security and communications

Be safe out there!

Amramp accessibility experts offer quick installation and products that are designed to promote aging in place while meeting ADA standards, bringing new meaning to staying “safely at home”.

3 Easy Ways for Wheelchair Users to Make Summer Travels Less Stressful

Posted on Wed, May 23, 2018

Summer travels are often overwhelming -- trying to beat the heat while also taking on never-ending lines at the airport can be the makings of wishing you’d never left home. For wheelchair users, there is the added stress of being sure that all accommodations are met to ensure a safe and comfortable experience.

Airport-TSA-Travel-Accessibility-Accomodations-Airlines-Airline-Airplane-Federal-Aviation-Administration-Disability-Regulations-Amramp

Wheelchair users and folks facing mobility issues may find these tips & tricks from Creditcard.com’s article “The fully accessible guide to flying for people with disabilities” helpful to make their flying ordeal more pleasant.

  1.  Be sure to research all airline choices fully before purchasing tickets

Each airline offers different accommodations, so looking into what can be provided prior to purchasing (generally non-refundable) tickets is the best bet. Major airlines such as Delta and United Airlines are equipped with many services to aid those with mobility concerns.

Delta airlines has a special group of employees, known as Complaint Resolution Official (CRO), that are specifically trained in understanding the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and Department of Transportation (DOT) disability regulations. United Airlines allows you to submit a request online for things such as

  • obtaining an aisle chair,
  • being seated in a chair with a moveable aisle armrest,
  • adjoining seats with a care-provider, and
  • extra legroom.
  1. Call your airline, hotel, and TSA ahead of time to ensure a smooth process

Once you book your ticket, it’s imperative to communicate with those you are traveling with concerning the accommodations you desire. Most are willing to work with you regarding any accommodations needed as long as you call ahead. This gives them time to prepare any equipment or employees that may be needed to assist you. You can also ask for tips on how to make your travel experience easier, such as the boarding process and TSA pre-check.

  1. Take your equipment into consideration

There’s always a chance for something to go not as planned; even the smallest travel setback can cause turmoil. Creditcards.com suggests these considerations for those with a physical disability:

  • Use your own wheelchair or mobility equipment, and check it at the gate. While airlines will provide you with one, using your own equipment can eliminate wasted time and stress from switching from yours to theirs and vice versa.
  • Bring spare parts. If it could break, assume that it will and prepare accordingly.
  • If your wheelchair needs wet-cell batteries or anything that typically isn’t allowed on airplanes, make sure to call ahead and talk with TSA about your equipment needs.
  • Find the right luggage. You want luggage that is easy to handle, protects your medical equipment, and is easy to find in a sea of suitcases.

Many problems that arise at the airport are unavoidable whether it’s lost luggage or a delayed flight, but remember the small things that can be done to prevent the headaches that could’ve been avoided.
